Editorial note: Many of Sir George's writings and lectures were penned in the 1950s-70s and, since the world is changing rapidly, some of his language usage now seems dated especially with regard to gender-biased terms. Many modernly-used non-sexist and non-imperialist terms came into common usage only in the 1980s-90s, when Sir George was already old. He encountered and acknowledged such developments in the 1970s but, coming from a pre-1960s spiritual and intellectual tradition, his use of terms such as 'God' and 'Man' were well-ingrained in his language and thinking, and should be understood in this historical context.
